Gifts of Cryptocurrency

Example of How it Works

Lance and Maria have two goals. First, they want to ensure, along with their young adult children, that they can give during their lifetimes and teach their children about the power of philanthropy. So, they meet as a family and decide on the organizations they want to support. Second, they want their legacy to continue after they are gone, so they are considering long-term charitable strategies.

To address both goals, Lance and Maria make a $75,000 donation of cryptocurrency to start their Endowed Donor-Advised Fund. After converting the cryptocurrency, the donation is invested. Since donating cryptocurrency is a non-taxable event, Lance and Maria do not owe capital gains tax on the appreciated amount and can deduct it from their taxes. Each year, a portion of the income from the invested funds will support organizations most important to their family.
