More on gifts of cash
Did you know that you can mail a check at the end of the year? Your deduction is based on the postmark date. Even if the envelope is not received by The Community Foundation until after the new year, the IRS will allow you to take a deduction for this year if it is postmarked on or before December 31st.
Recent changes to postal service operations may affect delivery times. To ensure your gift is credited to the current year, we recommend:
- Requesting a hand-stamped postmark at the post office counter showing the actual mailing date
- Purchasing postage at the counter where the printed label reflects the acceptance date
- Using certified or registered mail
- Or, consider giving online to receive immediate confirmation and avoid any mailing delays
